Time Management Tips

I had the opportunity to present to a professional group a few months ago. I spoke on time management and how entrepreneurs can keep it in balance. Here are a few tips I shared.

Evaluate time priorities, but don't become enslaved to the minutes

Prioritizing is important for successful time management however, do not become a slave to it. Sometimes it’s easy to overcompensate in an area where we have been undisciplined and we can swing too far in the opposite direction. This can cause rigidity that doesn’t allow us to be flexible when plans need to change. Order your priorities, but leave room for change.

Be fluid in your planning, allowing for the seasons, the unexpected, etc.

Life doesn’t slow down just because we made a priority list. When creating any schedule, remember that the unexpected can occur, so leave a little margin to adapt and be flexible.

Identify the voices that are defining what is valuable and what is a priority

There are lots of things that direct how we spend our time. It’s important to identify what those things are and what they saying to us. Also determine whether or not those voices are in alignment with what you value and your priorities. If they aren’t, stop listening!

Resist the urge to do it all "now"

It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to get everything done right now. Making a list of priorities and then trying to complete it all at once is counterproductive. Once you’ve made your list, schedule a date and time to work on each item.
