Anniversary: Year 3

2021 has arrived and brings with it a hope that seems to be universally expected. Each new year brings change, but 2020 brought the type of change that is unimaginable. If I said I knew that I would be taking on the challenges of a pandemic as a business owner, of course I would be lying. Pivot doesn’t begin to describe the type of recalibration I had to do in order to move with the completely re-sculpted business landscape.

I was fortunate to not have to manage a staff or office space, but I did have to work through the very tangible change of course of the marketplace in regards to procuring clients. Before the pandemic hit, I was looking to feel different about entrepreneurship. I wanted to feel like I was “legit”, like how kids want to feel like grown-ups by the clothes they wear or the responsibilities they have. Being a business owner felt like I had put on high heels but didn’t really know how to walk in them. Much like that girl taking her first steps and wobbling, I stumbled through my first 2 years of entrepreneurship. Now as I enter year three, I realize what everyone (well, maybe not everyone) realizes as they transition into adulthood. The shoes don’t make you a grown-up, your mindset does.

2020 made me embrace the reality that I am a legitimate entrepreneur whether I feel like I am or not. While it’s comforting to know I don’t have to prove anything to anyone here in year three, I’m excited that I want to. Here’s to another year in business!
