Networking

I read a post on LinkedIn that discussed how to best leverage the opportunities business social media provides. As I was scrolling through the comments, I noticed that people were seeking to do what the post recommended, which was to connect with as many people as you could to grow your network. One person astutely commented, “Is that a network or followers?” Just because you have a million connections on LinkedIn does not mean you are actually connected or have a true network.

The purpose of a business network is to help you connect to business opportunities. When it functions correctly, the people in it are actively exchanging information, contacts, experience and other resources to advance professional goals. Having a headcount of people whose skills and value you are unaware of is like having a chest of gold coins buried in your backyard. You know how many you have and that it is valuable, but if you don’t actually use it, it becomes worthless.

Instead of amassing connections, be intentional about leveraging the ones you have. Take time to review the people you know in terms of their skills and resources and how you both can take advantage of your relationship. As you do so, your network will organically expand with your business.
